Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the VA San Diego Healthcare System have found that deficiencies in the neural processing of simple auditory tones can evolve into a cascade of dysfunctional information processing across wide swaths of the brain in patients with schizophrenia.

The findings are published in the current online edition of the journal Neuroimage.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by disturbed thought processes and difficulty in discerning real from unreal perceptions. Common symptoms include auditory hallucinations and unfounded suspicious ideas. The disorder affects about 1 percent of the U.S. population, or roughly 3 million people.

"Impairments in the early stages of sensory information processing are associated with a constellation of abnormalities in schizophrenia patients," said Gregory Light, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego and senior author of the study.

These impairments, according to Light, may explain how schizophrenia patients develop clinical symptoms such as hearing voices that others cannot hear and difficulty with cognitive tasks involving attention, learning and recalling information. "If someone's brain is unable to efficiently detect subtle changes in sounds despite normal hearing, they may not be able to automatically direct their attention and rapidly encode new information as it is being presented."

Light and colleagues used electroencephalography a technique that records patterns of electrical brain activity using electrodes positioned on the scalp on 410 schizophrenia patients and 247 nonpsychiatric comparison subjects. The researchers employed novel computational imaging approaches to deconstruct the brain dynamics that underlie two leading neurobiological markers used in schizophrenia research: mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a event-related potentials.

In healthy volunteers, a specific pattern of EEG responses across a complex network of brain structures is elicited within a fraction of a second in response to changes in auditory tones. In patients with schizophrenia, the researchers found that this normal process is disrupted. Reduced activity in specific areas of the medial frontal lobe quickly propagated to other regions of the brain that support activation of attentional networks.

"Changes in the tone of speech convey complex information including nuances of emotional meaning and content," said Light, who is also associate director of the VISN-22 Mental Illness, Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the San Diego VA Medical Center. "If a patient's brain is not processing auditory information optimally, he or she may miss out on important-but-subtle social cues and other critical information. They may not properly recognize sarcasm or humor that is carried by pitch changes in speech. This can be a major barrier to achieving better functioning in social relationships, school or job performance, and ultimately limit their overall quality of life."

In research published earlier this year, Light and colleagues established that MMN and P3a showed promise for unlocking the elusive brain and molecular dysfunctions of schizophrenia patients. "These brain-based biomarkers may eventually prove to be useful for assisting clinicians with diagnosis, guiding treatment decisions, and tracking therapeutic response over time. These measures may also predict which individuals are at risk for developing a serious mental illness and are most likely to benefit from course-altering early interventions."

According to Stephen R. Marder, MD, VISN-22 MIRECC director and a professor at UCLA's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, "this study makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of how impairments in the very early processing of sensory information in schizophrenia can explain the complex symptoms of the illness. This new knowledge may also be useful in developing better pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for schizophrenia."

Groupon CEO Decision - Business Insider

Yesterday, three news stories appeared that reported essentially the same thing:

Board members at Groupon were discussing firing the company's CEO, Andrew Mason.

These news stories did not cite each other. Rather, they cited "sources" close to the situation. (Kara Swisher at All Things D broke the story.* Then Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal followed. Kara Swisher is a great reporter and may have flushed out the information, but sources confirmed it--not just to her but to the WSJ and Bloomberg*).

Often, when separate news stories contain essentially the same information and don't cite each other, it means that a person or company wants the information out there.

In the case of the Groupon, it was not immediately obvious who stood to gain from the Andrew Mason information.

It didn't help Andrew Mason, certainly.

And it didn't help the company, whose leadership was suddenly thrown into limbo.

And it didn't help the board as a whole, which looked like it was stabbing its CEO in the back.

It seemed unlikely that high-quality publications like All Things D, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal would run with secondhand information. So it seemed the information had come directly from (or at the behest of) one or more of the board members who are discussing firing Mason.

Judging from the Wall Street Journal's story, which cited "fractures" and "clashes" between Andrew Mason and board members Eric Lefkofsky and Brad Keywell, it's not hard to guess who those board members might be.

In any event, leaking information like that was a cutthroat thing to do.

And it put Andrew Mason in an incredibly awkward position.

For one thing, it forced him to address in public the question of whether the board might fire him, which he did at our conference today in New York. Mason had a good answer for that question: With the stock getting clobbered, of course the board was discussing whether he is the right guy for the job. But boards generally have those discussions in private, not in newspapers.

Importantly, if everyone on the board wanted to fire Mason, there would have been no need to leak the story. The board could just have canned Mason at the upcoming meeting and announced the news when it was a fait accompli. So it seems likely that a board member or two want to oust Mason and other board members don't--and that the ones who do want to oust him blindsided him.

(That was the impression I got in our interview today, by the way--that Mason had been blindsided. He was articulate and composed, but he also seemed almost resigned to the fact that he was going to get canned).

It will be interesting to one day get the full story.

It will also be interesting to see how the situation plays out.

And inasmuch as someone on the Groupon board apparently wants us to have a public discussion about whether Andrew Mason should be canned, let's go ahead and have one.

The fire-Mason case is clear:

  • Groupon's stock has had an abysmal year since its IPO a year ago.
  • Groupon's international business is imploding.
  • The growth of Groupon's core daily deal business has slowed to a crawl, and the product still clearly needs tuning (there are too many anecdotal stories of merchants not liking the product)
  • There has been some senior management turnover
  • A big part of the problem at the company is external perception (which starts at the top)
  • Andrew Mason has only a few years of business experience and is now responsible for turning around and managing a massive global corporation, winning over Wall Street and the media, instilling passion and confidence in tens of thousands of rattled customers and employees

The give-Mason-more-time case, however, is also compelling:

  • Groupon has likely grown faster than any company in history--from zero to $2.5 billion in revenue, 12,000 employees, and profitability in less than four years
  • Groupon is still growing
  • Groupon is making money
  • Groupon has crushed almost all of its competitors
  • Groupon has successfully launched a new business--merchandise--that is already doing more than $1.5 billion of annualized revenue
  • Groupon's North American business is still doing well--it's the acquired companies in Europe that are the problem
  • Mason has a lot left to learn, but he is learning quickly
  • All companies go through rough periods.?

What decision will the board make? What's the right decision?

That's a tough one.

In my opinion, it depends a lot on Andrew Mason.

Andrew Mason has led Groupon this far (and very few observers appreciate how spectacularly hard that has been to do). If Andrew Mason wants to fight to keep his job, commits to learning more about how to run a multi-national corporation and communicate better with Wall Street and the media, and remains excited and passionate about his job, then he should be given more time. Not an indefinite amount of time, but more time.

If, on the other hand, Andrew Mason has learned that managing a huge global corporation, dealing with the media and investors, and continuing to build and manage a top-notch senior executive team is just not as much fun or as rewarding as leading Groupon in the early years, then he should step aside (or get canned).

This, by the way, is not a new situation for a founder-CEO to find himself in.

The skills and leadership ability required to grow a startup are different than those required to turn around and manage a vast global corporation. And many talented entrepreneurs and executives decide that they prefer one to the other.

I have huge respect for Andrew Mason for doing the interview today. Most CEOs would have cancelled the conference appearance. I also have huge respect for what Mason and his team have accomplished at Groupon over the past three years.

If Mason wants some more time to prove himself and fix Groupon, the board should give him more time.

If he doesn't, I hope he resigns quickly, helps hire a great new CEO, and then eventually gets more credit for building the company than he has to date.

The reason that leak was so ruthless, though, is that it will be hard to recover from.

Groupon's CEO has been placed in limbo.

At today's board meeting, the board will have to do and then say something. And even if the board decides to give Mason more time, everyone at the company (and in the world) will know that that's what they're doing. And they will also know that Mason's grace period will be short. That will hurt Mason's authority, both internally and externally, which will make it even more difficult for him to succeed.

(Yes, the board could put out a statement saying that it has "complete confidence" in Mason or something, but under the circumstance, this would be laughable.)

To resolve the situation in Mason's favor would require the resignation of the board members who want him gone. But even this wouldn't fix it. Everyone would know why these board members were quitting--because they had lost confidence in the CEO--and that wouldn't help Mason's authority, either.

Even if Andrew Mason wants to fight for his job, in other words, it will be a tough fight to win.

Whoever stabbed him in the back knew what they were doing.

* To be clear: I'm not suggesting that this story was actively "placed" with Kara Swisher. Swisher is an aggressive and experienced reporter, she is deeply sourced at Groupon, and this was a great scoop. Andrew Mason was originally scheduled to appear at our conference on Tuesday. On Monday evening, Groupon canceled his Tuesday appearance and did not immediately confirm a Wednesday appearance. Normally, late cancellations like this mean something. Swisher likely assumed that this one meant that Mason was in trouble and called Groupon sources to confirm that. The point I am making is that at least two of Swisher's Groupon sources elected to say that the Groupon board was "seriously discussing" firing Andrew Mason. The sources did not have to say that. And they then did not have to say the same thing to Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. The sources could have said nothing. Given the sophistication of some of the people involved, I believe the sources knew full well what would happen if they confirmed Swisher's perfectly reasonable questions. They don't call it "boardroom intrigue" for nothing...

Hubble eyes a loose spiral galaxy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the spiral galaxy ESO 499-G37, seen here against a backdrop of distant galaxies, scattered with nearby stars.

The galaxy is viewed from an angle, allowing Hubble to reveal its spiral nature clearly. The faint, loose spiral arms can be distinguished as bluish features swirling around the galaxy's nucleus. This blue tinge emanates from the hot, young stars located in the spiral arms. The arms of a spiral galaxy have large amounts of gas and dust, and are often areas where new stars are constantly forming.

The galaxy's most characteristic feature is a bright elongated nucleus. The bulging central core usually contains the highest density of stars in the galaxy, where typically a large group of comparatively cool old stars are packed in this compact, spheroidal region.

One feature common to many spiral galaxies is the presence of a bar running across the center of the galaxy. These bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing the star formation.

Recent studies suggest that ESO 499-G37's nucleus sits within a small bar up to a few hundreds of light-years along, about a tenth the size of a typical galactic bar. Astronomers think that such small bars could be important in the formation of galactic bulges since they might provide a mechanism for bringing material from the outer regions down to the inner ones. However, the connection between bars and bulge formation is still not clear since bars are not a universal feature in spiral galaxies.

The galaxy ESO 499-G37 lies in the southern border of the constellation of Hydra, which is shared with Antlia.

ESO 499-G37 was first observed in the late seventies within the ESO/Uppsala Survey of the ESO (B) atlas. This was a joint project undertaken by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Uppsala Observatory, which used the ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile, to map a large portion of the southern sky looking for stars, galaxies, clusters, and planetary nebulae.

This picture was created from visible and infrared exposures taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

York College professor John Levisky, forensic expert, dies

He worked as a forensic anthropologist on the exhumation of the remains of Albert DeSalvo, the alleged "Boston Strangler," according to the college.

John "Jack" Levisky II was involved in forensic work on a number of high-profile investigations, both locally and nationally, but those close to him said there's much more to say about him.

He was career military officer and a model railroad enthusiast. He played the accordion and flew small planes and later ultralights.

And, he loved teaching, the job he held at York College for 33 years. He retired this fall but still signed on to teach two courses as an adjunct.

"It was his inspiration," said friend and colleague Barbara Hanbury. "I think we always said ... that gave Jack a reason to keep living. There were times where he was really fighting with illness. We thought, once he gets in the classroom he becomes alive again."

Levisky, a professor of forensic anthropology, died over the weekend at age 74, according to the college and his family. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992, and it recently progressed, his son, John Levisky III of Lancaster, said.

Teaching was a passion for Levisky, his son said.

"When he really could no longer teach this year, that was kind of hard on him," the younger Levisky said. "He always said he was going to teach until he couldn't teach anymore."

Levisky began at York College in 1979, after retiring as a major in the U.S. Air Force, and rose through the ranks to become professor in 1998, said Mary Ligon, chairwoman of the behavioral sciences department. York College faculty are set to vote Tuesday on granting Levisky professor emeritus status, which honors distinguished contributions in teaching, professional achievement and service to the college and community.

Levisky, of West York, did forensic work on a number of high-profile cases in York County, such as the murders of Hopethan Johnson and Christina Colon, and national cases, such as the "Boston Strangler."

Hanbury, associate professor of criminal justice, worked with Levisky, called "the bone guy" for his area of expertise, on dozens of cases. He never wanted anyone to give him information on a case, she said. He wanted to draw conclusions based on what he learned himself while examining bones.

Whenever they were called for a case, she said, he'd gather up as many interested students as he could, so they could get hands-on experience.

Eric Ling, a friend and associate professor of criminal justice at the college, said Levisky had time for everyone - the high achieving students as well as those who might not be getting it. He was patient with everyone who stepped into his office.

Levisky played the accordion since he was 7, Ling said, and "definitely got the hang of it the last few years."

"We played a lot of Irish music together," he said.

Levisky is survived by his wife, Essie; two children, four step children, four grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and one great-grandchild and other relatives.

Hanbury said he was one of those people who's just a good soul.

"Just a kind, giving soul ... that's what I think about when I think about Jack," she said.

York College professor John Levisky was involved in some high profile forensics investigations, such as in 2001, when he worked on the exhumation of the remains of Albert DeSalvo, the confessed "Boston Strangler."

Levisky said in a 2007 York Daily Record story that being involved in such prominent cases is exciting but that the ultimate goal is the same, whether the subject is famous or not.

"Our objective is to enhance forensic science if we can," he said. "We're looking at this from the perspective of, what can forensic science learn from this? Whether it's high profile or not, the challenge and the excitement are there."

Levisky's cases

John Levisky did forensic work on high profile cases both nationally and locally.

In 2008, Levisky and a team of college students uncovered some of the skeletal remains of York County murder victim Hopethan Johnson. Also in York County, in 2005, he reassembled the skull of murder victim Christina Colon, who was pregnant at the time of her death.

Outside of York, he was part of a team that worked on the exhumation of the remains of Albert DeSalvo, the confessed "Boston Strangler" during the summer 2001, according to the college.

He was also part of an effort to examine the remains of biochemist Frank Olson, who jumped out a window in 1953 after the CIA gave him LSD in a secret experiment.

In 2007, he was tapped to help when there was talk of exhuming magician Harry Houdini's body to investigate the cause of his death, though it never happened.

Mick Jagger's love letters to singer Marsha Hunt up for auction

(Reuters) - Love letters written by Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger to American singer Marsha Hunt, discussing poetry and his personal turmoil, will hit the auction block next month.

Hunt, with whom Jagger had his first child, Karis, told Britain's Guardian newspaper she was selling the letters, written in July and August 1969, because she had been unable to pay her bills.

"I'm broke," Hunt, who lives in France, told the newspaper.

The Guardian said on Friday the 10 letters would be sold by Sotheby's on December 12.

The auction house values the letters from between 70,000 and 100,000 pounds ($111,000-$160,000).

Jagger wrote them to Hunt while filming the Tony Richardson movie "Ned Kelly" in Australia.

They are described as showing a sensitive side of the then-young singer, who wrote about the poetry of Emily Dickinson, meeting author Christopher Isherwood and an unrealized multimedia project.

Jagger's relationship with Hunt, who is African-American, was kept under wraps until 1972.

"The sale is important," Hunt told The Guardian. "Someone, I hope, will buy those letters as our generation is dying and with us will go the reality of who we were and what life was."

Hunt has said she was the inspiration for the Rolling Stones' song "Brown Sugar," which Jagger wrote while in Australia.

The rock star also cites in the letters the disintegration of his relationship with singer Marianne Faithful, whom he was also dating at the time, and the death of Rolling Stones' guitarist Brian Jones.
